OSH Duty of Care Is a Manager Habit
Safety posters do not supervise work. Managers do — in ordinary decisions under production pressure.
Duty of care shows up in ordinary decisions
Rushing a job without controls, ignoring near-misses, or mocking PPE compliance are duty failures in practice — even when the safety policy document is excellent.
Daily manager behaviours that count
- Brief hazards before high-risk tasks — not only at annual training
- Enforce stop-work authority seriously when it is used
- Respond to reports without humiliation
- Do not publicly reward speed that skipped controls
Near-miss posture
Calling a near-miss “lucky” teaches silence. Calling it data teaches prevention. Thank the reporter, capture facts, assign an owner and date, share learning without naming-and-shaming.
