Team Building After Restructure: Do’s and Don’ts
Post-restructure teams carry loss and uncertainty. Design must acknowledge reality or facilitation feels manipulative.
Honesty first
Pretending nothing changed makes team building feel like corporate theatre. People need permission to name friction — then structured work on how to operate together next.
Do
- Acknowledge the change in the opening (without gossip)
- Mix groups across old boundaries on purpose
- Create joint problem-solving wins on real work issues
- Close with 2–3 operating norms the team will test for 30 days
Don’t
- Forced cheerfulness or “leave politics at the door” shutdowns
- Ignoring known conflicts that everyone already feels
- One-off party with no debrief or follow-up
- Using team building to replace formal HR processes when those are required
