Harassment Reporting Channels Must Be Usable
A policy PDF is not a channel. People need a believable path that does not punish the reporter.
Trust determines usage
If employees believe reporting ends careers, formal systems become decorative. Channel design is only half the work — the first manager or HR response decides whether the next person speaks.
Design checks
- More than one reporting route (not only “tell your boss”)
- Confidentiality boundaries explained in plain language
- Response timelines that are realistic and kept
- Protection against retaliation stated and enforced
First-response script for managers
- Listen without interrogating like an investigator if policy says escalate
- Do not promise outcomes you cannot control
- Protect confidentiality — no corridor narration
- Document factually and involve HR early
